Wissahickon, Philadelphia

Wissahickon is the informal name given to the area of Roxborough close to the Wissahickon Creek section of Fairmount Park in northwest Philadelphia. The boundaries are Ridge Avenue to the west, the Schuylkill River to the south, East Falls to the east, and Germantown to the north at Wissahickon Avenue. Many larger Georgian Revival houses are located in the area, as are neighborhoods like Blue Bell Hill (Park Line Drive between Johnson and Hortter Streets). Most of the land in this area is on a summit. It is known for the old hermits who founded the neighborhood. Cook-Wissahickon Elementary School is within its borders. It also has a SEPTA train station, serving the R-6 or Norristown line, within the neighborhood.
The Ridge Avenue Bridge in Philadelphia was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
